Is there a good way to go about showing a thumbnail of the current document in a custom panel, similar to how the navigator panel shows one?
The only method I can think of would be to save the document as a png and load it in, which would be highly inefficient.

As far as I know, there's no other way.
Possibly, the new Photoshop Touch SDK will allow direct image sharing between the extension hosted by the touch device and PS - but CS SDK extensions, nothing.

Not really - I've took a pause from Touch SDK for I felt I needed more background on programming (which I'm slowly getting).
But as far as I know the SDKs are free, so you can get a look at them.
