Script to "edit contents" of Linked files/layers

I've been trying to create an action or script that makes an adjustment to a smart object / linked file. When the action records it shows the step as "edit contents" but during playback the adjustments in ACR are not made automatically - it waits for the users input. I have also tried the ScriptListener and had the same result.
Does anyone know if there is a work around?
